Art @ The Gardens

Come enjoy art with us and several other creators at Art @ the Gardens. A variety of free art activities and organizations will be there to party with us! It will be located at the International Peace Gardens on 900 West Salt Lake City, Utah.
Beginner Crochet: Afghan Blanket
with Karleen Deifel

Registration for all 3 sessions of this class is REQUIRED.
In this 3-session class with community volunteer Karleen Diefel, you will learn the basics of crochet. As you learn how to select yarn and hooks, create a chain, and hook a variety of easy stitches, you will begin creating your own Afghan blanket using the granny square technique. Students will start their blanket in class and have the opportunity to continue working on it at home or during Open Studio hours with assistance.
Ages 12-100+

Beginner Drawing
with Kate Jarman-Gates

Registration required:
In this 3-week course you'll get acquainted with the basics of how to draw realism from a photo with pencil and paper. Together we'll practice observational drawing skills, including armatures, proportions, angles, and shading. Learn new techniques in this safe and encouraging space to take your drawing skills to the next level!
All ages and abilities are welcome. Ages 10 and under must be accompanied by a responsible adult or teenager.

Salt Lake Artists Meetup
with Kate Jarman-Gates

Formerly our "The Artist's Way" book club, this event is now extended to any Salt Lake artists and makers whether or not they've read Julia Cameron's book.
This club is a safe place to share ideas, personal progress, and get encouragement from other creators. There will also be plenty of opportunities to work on your craft and enjoy snacks while we discuss our art journeys with each other.
Please register for this club so we can plan accordingly.
Open Studio (Saturdays)
with Kate Jarman-Gates

Creators of all ages and kinds are welcome (children under 12 must be accompanied by a responsible teen or adult). Bring your own project from home or start something new in our maker space. There will be art supplies, snacks, a professional artist on hand to help, and lots of other creators to socialize with. Bring yourself and a creative attitude to make some art!

Bookbinding: "Gay Agendas"
with Kate Jarman-Gates

In this 2-session course you'll learn the basics of long stitch bookbinding. Students will enjoy designing, stitching, and decorating their own agendas (or planners, or diaries, or sketchbooks) in a safe and inclusive environment. LGBTQ+ folks and allies are invited to come!

Leather Tooling
with Stephen Diefel

In this free community art class, neighborhood artist Stephen Diefel will teach you how to design, stamp, carve, and finish a hand-tooled leather piece to take home. You must purchase your own project kit of your choice from Tandy Leather or Rocky Mountain Leather in advance and bring it to class. Those who don't bring their own kit will use a keychain or coaster kit provided by the studio. The studio will provide stamps, mallets, and boards. If you would like to learn and practice leather carving, please bring your own swivel knife with your name on it.
